Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engg. deptt. of BITS is well equipped to face the challenges of new technologies in the field of Mechanical Engg. with the help of dedicated and qualified faculty and ultramodern laboratories. The deptt. is contributing its best to train the brains of budding engineers. The deptt. has following laboratories and workshops.

Mechanical Labs.

• Kinematics of Machine Lab.
  The lab is equipped with various Models of Mechanisms such as 4-bar link mechanisms, cans follower, differential gear, flywheel steering, pantograph etc.
  
  
• Strength of Material Lab.
  The lab is equipped with material testing machines. Machines like universal testing machine, fatigue testing machine, impact testing machine and other Hardness measuring instruments are specially installed.
  
  
• Fluid Mechanics Lab.
  The lab is equipped with Hydraulic Ram, Francis turbine pelton wheel, Kaplan turbine. Experiments related to fluid are performed e.g. testing and measuring discharge pressure, flow rate and stability condition for ship.
  
  
• I.C. Engine Lab.
  Various study models of I.C. engines, testing and measuring devices. etc are in the I.C. engine lab.
  
  
• AutoCAD Lab.
  Lab is equipped with latest software Pro-Engineers, CATIA, ANSYS, AutoCAD, UG etc.
  
  
• Energy Conversion Lab.
  The lab is equipped with different types of boilers, condensers, evaporators & heat exchangers, and turbines. This lab gives a complete idea of converting water in to stem.
  
  
• Heat and Mass ransfer Lab.
  This lab is equipped with all equipments of conduction, convection (Natural & Forced), and radiation. Stefan Boltzmann apparatus, thermal Boundry layer apparatus etc.
  
  
• Material Science Lab.
  This lab is related to the study of materials. It has different types of models of BCC structure, FCC structure, Iron carbon diagram chart, metallurgical charts of steel etc.
  
  
• Measurement & Instrument Lab
  This lab. is equipped withLVDT, RVDT i.e. linear variable Differential Transformer & Resistance variable Differential ransformer etc. and other type of measurement instruments.
  
  
• Dynamics of Machine Lab.
  This lab is equipped with all type of Governer i.e. Watt governer, pester governer proell governer & Hardness governers and effect of gryroseope on ship and plane etc.
  
  
• Manufacturing Process Lab.
  This lab. is equipped with Lathe Machine, Milling Machine, Surface grinder, Power hacksaw, Shaper, Planer, Hand Grinder etc.
  
  
• Element of Mech. Engg. Lab.
  This lab. is equipped with mounting assessories of bioler, I.C. Engine & basic of Mechanical Engineering Models.
  
  
  Workshops
  In the well equipped workshops of BITS, the students acquire skill and hands on practice in the usage of various tools, devices and machines and all the operations of workshop technology. The deptt. comprises of the following shops :
  
  
• Carpentry Shop
  Here Students learn to acquaint them selves with different types of wood and their application, designing patterns etc.
  
  
• Machine Shop
  Students work on different machines e.g. milling, (vertical, horizontal & universals) lathes, shaper, grinders, (surface grinder), drilling machines etc. and all the cutting tools are available in the lab.
  
  
• Sheet Metal
  Various sheet metal operations like punching, blanking, notching, shearing, slitting, etc. are performed on the floor.
  
  
• Welding Shop
  It is a special part of fabriction where students work on the welding equipment of gas welding, arc welding etc.
  
  
• Fitting Shop
  Students learn about various fitting operation, which they apply in preparing jobs assigned to them
  
  
• Forging Shop
  In this shop, students work with or study different hot working and cold working processes etc.
  
  
• Foundry
  Foundry shops shows the foundry methods, how to make moulds, cope & Drag, Riser, Gating system, Different type of furnaces like cupola, etc.
  
  In these shops, students not only acquire the skill to prepare the jobs as per their prescribed curriculum but are also given some small project assignments to develop their innovative skills.
